The Full Story: Marsh's Takeout

At Marsh’s Takeout, we’re more than just a restaurant — we’re a cornerstone of Bonavista’s history and a proud part of its community. Our story is one of dedication, family, and a commitment to serving great food that spans generations.

It all began in the 1950s when Fredrick Marsh, the son of a local fisherman, traded the sea for the kitchen. After leaving school to fish with his father, Fredrick’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to open a small burger and fries joint on what is now Moulands Lane, just steps from his childhood home. This humble beginning marked the birth of what would become a local institution.

By the 1960s, Fredrick moved the restaurant to its current location at 62 Church Street, expanding the menu to include our beloved submarine sandwiches. In the early 1970s, he introduced fried chicken to the lineup, a dish that quickly became a community favorite. Later that decade, Marsh’s became the first restaurant in Bonavista (to the best of our knowledge) to serve pizza — a tradition we proudly continue today.

Fredrick’s youngest son, George, became instrumental in the restaurant’s success, helping to grow the business while keeping the focus on family values and exceptional service. On March 12, 1994, George officially took over ownership, ensuring the restaurant would remain in the hands of the Marsh family for future generations.

Today, Marsh’s Takeout is proudly owned and operated by George’s son and Fredrick’s grandson. With a deep respect for the legacy of his father and grandfather, he carries forward the tradition of serving delicious food with the same passion and dedication that began over half a century ago.

In 2012, Marsh's undertook a major renovation to modernize the space while preserving the heart and soul of what makes Marsh’s special. Today, they proud to be Bonavista’s oldest family-run restaurant, still serving up the same homemade flavors and warm hospitality that have made them a favorite for decades.
